GSA hails LTE Broadcast growth
November, 2015
Evaluating the LTE Broadcast Opportunity, a report published by the Global mobile Suppliers Association, monitors 30 Operator field trials of eMBMS services and documents the number of enabled devices - listing 96 products in trials or with chips sets that would allow them to be used for LTE Broadcast services.
The report predicts that LTE Broadcast will reach two billion customers by 2020, for a variety of uses in addition to mobile broadcast TV, including:
- Innovative stadium entertainment services
- Emergency broadcast systems
- Distribution of public and transport information
- Software and firmware upgrades for computers and IoT-connected devices

The research and analysis for the report, which was undertaken for GSA by technology analyst company Innovation Observatory, encompassed interviews with leading vendors, operators and broadcasters trialing eMBMS, and surveys of the global telecoms community and of potential end users/buyers of LTE Broadcast services.
3GPP Specifications referred to in the report
In the Report's Conclusions and Recommendations - The author refers to 3GPP features that are delivered from Release 12 onwards, such as MBMS operation on Demand (MOOD) and High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC).
Here is a list of the Current Rel-12 and Rel-13 eMBMS features (from http://www.3gpp.org/specifications/work-plan).
