5G from Taipei to Guildford
December 2, 2015
3GPP Leaders and staff have visited two major research initiatives in the past week, to discuss standards and to encourage the efficient alignment of 5G research output with the 3GPP work plan.
On November 24, ITRI of Taiwan hosted a summit on 3GPP - attracting over 150 attendees - followed this week by a 3GPP visit to the 5GIC, the University of Surrey centre for next-generation wireless technology.
Both visits featured presentations as well as a lively exchange of views on how to get innovation from the 5G projects in to 3GPP specifications.
Although it is likely that a lot of work will come in via companies, there is a real prospect that experts from ITRI and the 5GIC - as well as other 5G incubators - will bring direct contributions as 3GPP studies the use cases and requirements for 5G.
Key presentations from Taiwan:
- 3GPP GERAN Status update – Legacy systems and future role for GSM/EDGE Systems
- 3GPP Core Network Aspects
- 3GPP Systems Aspects - The timeline for 3GPP architecture evolution
- RAN activities, Release 13 Status & 5G Timeline
- LAA and Wi-Fi Coexistence work – A case study on cooperation (ITRI)
- H2020: Future Internet Program (ITRI)
About ITRI and TAICS
ITRI President Liu Jonq-Min has stated that "Taiwan should participate in the development of 5G mobile communications standards early on so that these norms can be incorporated into the R&D results... In the future, the Institute will put its continuous effort in cooperation with Taiwan’s industry, government, and the research organizations, with the goal of establishing international standards to enhance Taiwan’s competency in the coming 5G era." ...more
ITRI is a partner in https://5g-ppp.eu/metis-ii/ and works in collaboration with the 5G-PPP.
TAICS is the Taiwan Association of Information and Communication Standards ...more
About 5GIC

5GIC key work areas are:
- Content and User/Network Context
- New Air-interface
- Light MAC (Medium Access Control) and RRM (Radio Resource Management)
- Multi-cell Joint Processing
- Antennas and Propagation
- System Architecture and Coexistence
- Testbed and Proof of Concept
