How to find RedCap in 3GPP

Jun 19,2023

The best place to find specifications and meeting decisions about the support of reduced capability NR devices (Acronym: NR_redcap) is in the Work Plan and amongst the meeting contributions, via TDocs and Change Requests (CRs).

RedCap doesn’t have its own overall specification, but it is a feature that has a wide impact on existing specs, to allow new radio (NR) to accommodate RedCap as a bridge between support for low complexity and high performance use cases... bringing in 'middle of the range' devices.

Support of reduced capability NR devices; demands include (inspired by RP-220293):

  • UE complexity reduction features
  • Definition of RedCap UE type including capabilities & constraints
  • Enabling RedCap UE identification
  • Whether a RedCap UE can camp on the cell/frequency
  • Updates to UE capabilities (38.306) and RRC parameters (38.331)
  • Extended DRX enhancements for RedCap UEs
  • RRM measurement relaxations for neighbouring cells for RedCap devices…

NR RedCap will play a large part in the growth of 5G, as 'wearables' for medical, business and personal monitoring come on stream. On an industrial scale, the other area of major growth will be the use of RedCap sensors for campuses, factories and large private sites.

This page is intended as a primer, as you step into the 3GPP RedCap work.
